While some Doonites prepared to celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, those planning to mark the day said they would indulge in family outings, going to cafes and gestures. Some restaurants, bakeries and florists across the city on Saturday saw increased bookings and orders ahead of the occasion. Several cafes introduced themed menus and dessert offers, expecting families and young adults to turn the day into a special outing. A cafe owner near Survey Chowk said that, “Many customers are reserving tables for family lunches because they want to spend uninterrupted time with their mothers”.

For some younger residents, Mother’s Day has become an opportunity to express emotions often left unsaid amid busy schedules. Tanuja Mehra said, “I used to think gifts were important, but now I feel mothers value attention more. This year I’m planning to give a framed photo of her along with a family dinner because I want my mother to feel appreciated, not just celebrated online”.

Students studying away from home also shared the emotional significance of the day. Engineering student Ankit Rawat said, “When you live in a hostel, you realise how much your mother does for you every single day. Even a simple phone call becomes emotional because home suddenly feels far away”, he said.

Working professionals in the city echoed similar sentiments. Vishnu Nautiyal said, “Mother’s Day reminds us to slow down. Mothers quietly manage everything without expecting recognition, so even one thoughtful gesture can mean a lot”.

For older mothers, however, companionship remains more valuable than expensive gifts or elaborate celebrations. Kamlesh Devi said, “Children become busy with work and life, which is natural. But when they sit beside you, share tea and talk freely, that feels more precious than any expensive present”.
