RTO cracks down on vehicles in night drive

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Dehradun conducted an extensive late-night checking drive in the city on Saturday. During this operation, a number of challans were issued and several vehicles were seized for serious violations, including drinking and driving, wrong-side driving and operating without number plates.
The drive was led by regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola. Three enforcement teams- the Dehradun enforcement team headed by Dehradun ARTO Pankaj Srivastava, the Vikasnagar enforcement team led by Vikasnagar ARTO Anil Negi and a team headed by transport tax officer Anuradha Pant at Asharodi, along with the entire enforcement staff participated in the drive. In total, 63 challans were issued during the drive and 16 vehicles were seized for serious irregularities including two vehicles for drunken driving.
Chamola stated that the checking campaign took place at various locations, including Clock Tower, ONGC Chowk, ISBT and Shimla Bypass Road, in response to increased traffic from Delhi, Haryana and other States heading to Mussoorie and other tourist destinations on weekends. Special attention was given to checking the documents of vehicles arriving from outside the State.
She further informed that action was taken under the Motor Vehicles Act against drivers of vehicles without number plates or displaying temporary plates marked “AF-Applied For,” as well as those with expired fitness certificates. Offenders included those engaging in drunken driving, wrong-side driving and violations of stop lines and zebra crossings.
Drunken driving tests were conducted at ONGC Chowk using an alcohol meter. Drivers found violating traffic rules were stopped at stop lines and zebra crossings, issued challans and educated about traffic regulations. Chamola emphasised that such campaigns will continue to promote road safety and traffic discipline. Drivers are urged to carry valid documents, avoid drinking, refrain from driving on the wrong side of the road and adhere to road safety rules.
