Cyber criminals misusing e-SIM technology for international calling scams

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

Cyber criminals are now using e-SIM technology to carry out international calling scams and cyber frauds. According to cyber safety officials, fraudsters first buy SIM cards using fake identity documents. They then secretly convert the physical SIM into an e-SIM and activate international roaming services.

After this, the SIM is used to make illegal international calls and carry out financial and cyber crimes. Officials warned that innocent people can also become victims if their SIM details are misused.

Cyber experts have advised people not to share OTPs, QR codes or SIM-related information with anyone. People have also been warned not to activate e-SIM services through unknown links, apps or fake customer care calls. If a mobile network suddenly stops working or the SIM gets deactivated without reason, users should immediately contact their telecom company.

Special Task Force senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh advised citizens not to allow others to use their SIM cards. In case of any cyber fraud, people can report the matter on the national cyber helpline number 1930 or through the cybercrime reporting portal.
