Garbage heaps dotting city raise concerns amid Swachh Survekshan drive

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

As the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) steps up preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2026-27 through steps including citizen feedback drives and awareness campaigns across schools and colleges, garbage accumulation in some parts of the city has highlighted the sanitation challenges that still remain. On Monday, heaps of garbage were seen in various localities, with residents complaining about irregular lifting of waste and dumping in vacant plots.

Garbage piles were seen on the roadside near the SBI main branch, near Nehru Colony, Subhash Road, St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and near a popular temple at Prince Chowk. Residents said that the waste and foul smell have become a recurring issue in the area. A resident, Archana Gupta said that complaints have been made several times but the problem keeps recurring after temporary cleaning.

There are many small roadside dumping spots at multiple locations, near the Government Doon Medical College Hospital and the Court Road. Residents alleged that the waste is not being lifted regularly on some stretches while vacant plots are increasingly being used as informal dumping grounds, areas such as Lakshmi Road, Ladpur, Nehrugram and Tibetan market.

People also pointed to garbage piling up in residential pockets and open spaces. Some residents said that while sanitation work has improved on major roads and market areas, smaller inner localities still require more regular monitoring and waste collection.

At the same time, the MCD has been carrying out multiple cleanliness-related activities under the Swachh Survekshan campaign. These include door-to-door awareness drives, citizen feedback collection, waste segregation campaigns and sanitation inspections across wards.

Assistant municipal commissioner Rajveer Singh Chauhan said that the corporation is taking the complaints seriously and acknowledged that maintaining cleanliness across a rapidly expanding city remains a challenge. He added that teams would inspect the affected locations and ensure more regular garbage lifting from problem areas.
