Funds for repairing water supply damaged last year awaited amid more damage this monsoon

At a time when the water supply schemes of the Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) are already getting affected due to rainfall, landslides and other factors in the ongoing monsoon season, funds for the permanent restoration of last year’s damaged water supply schemes are still pending.
Water supply schemes across the State get affected or damaged due to heavy rainfall, landslides and cloudbursts annually during monsoon. UJS first focuses on temporary restoration of these schemes during the monsoon and then carries out permanent restoration of the damaged water supply schemes as per the budget received according to their demands.
UJS secretary (Appraisal) Maneesh Semwal said that 3,453 water supply schemes were damaged during the monsoon in 2025. The UJS sought about Rs 123.28 crore from the authorities for their permanent restoration.

He said that out of the said amount, Rs 20.02 crore was received from the State government and Rs 14.05 crore from all the district magistrates. Apart from this, Rs 39.48 crore was sanctioned by the World Bank- which has not yet been received; Rs 25.84 crore is to be given by DMs and Rs 23.89 crore by the State government.

Considering this and the amount that has been received, out of the 3,453 water supply schemes damaged in last year’s monsoon season, 1,775 have been permanently restored, Semwal said. Apart from this, till July 29, about 466 water supply schemes have also been damaged due to heavy rainfall, landslides and other reasons.
