Uttarakhand’s first Sports University based in Haldwani will begin its first academic session on August 29 National Sports Day, Sports minister Rekha Arya said on Friday after the State cabinet approved the creation of 122 posts for the university.

Arya said that the university’s first session will formally begin with a traditional Pooja on August 29. The cabinet’s approval for the 122 posts will allow the university to move ahead with its academic and administrative operations. She said that the posts will be filled through direct recruitment through a transparent selection process and official advertisements for recruitment will be issued soon. The creation of the posts is also expected to open up new employment opportunities for young people in the State.

She said that this will be an important step for Uttarakhand’s sports sector. The university is expected to provide structured training and education to athletes while creating opportunities for young people interested in sports-related fields. She said that the university will also focus on identifying sporting talent from rural and remote parts of the State, where many young athletes do not have access to proper training facilities or specialised coaching.

According to Arya, the institution will seek to provide modern training, scientific support and better sporting facilities to help athletes improve their performance. The aim is to create a system where players can receive training and academic support while continuing to develop in their respective sports. She said that the university would give a new direction to Uttarakhand’s existing sports culture and help create a stronger pipeline of athletes from the State. The first session is expected to mark the beginning of the university’s academic activities, with the government planning to gradually strengthen its infrastructure, faculty and other facilities. The institution is also expected to play a role in giving greater opportunities to emerging athletes from across Uttarakhand.
