Dehradun Markets on Monday witnessed a rush of devotees on the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi, with families, youngsters and community organisers turning up to buy idols of Bhagwan Ganesh for home and public celebrations. From small idols meant for homes to larger ones for community pandals, vendors had put up idols in different sizes and designs to cater to different preferences and budgets. The festive mood was evident in several markets as devotees carried their idols home amid drumbeats and music.
Murti seller Gopal Singh said that the demand had been good this year, with customers arriving in groups to select idols. “Families are mostly buying smaller idols for their homes, while larger idols are being purchased for community celebrations. We are also seeing customers specifically asking for clay idols instead of plaster of Paris,” he said.
The rush also brought a festive atmosphere to the markets, with youngsters and families joining in the preparations for the celebrations. Customer Twinkle Rana said that the crowds and drumbeats had added to the excitement. “It is nice to see families and youngsters coming together to buy Ganesha idols. There is a lot of excitement among people about welcoming Bappa home,” she said.
Another customer Payal Chettri said that the availability of idols in different sizes had made it easier for people to celebrate according to their needs and budgets. “There are idols for almost every requirement, from small ones for homes to larger ones for pandals. The variety gives people more options while making their purchases,” she said.
Chettri said that she preferred clay idols and hoped more people would opt for them. “Festivals are important, but we should also be mindful of the environment. Choosing clay idols can help us celebrate while being more responsible towards nature,” she said.
