The municipal commissioner Abhishek Ruhela has directed the health section of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) to issue a notice to Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL) for the irregularities in the Sheeshambada solid waste management and recycling plant.
On Wednesday, some locals and members of Pachwadoon Sanyukt Samiti complained to Ruhela about several irregularities in the waste management plant. They said that there is a seven feet high heap of unprocessed garbage lying in the plant. According to them, the unprocessed leachate generation from the plant is polluting the underground water and destroying the crops. They said that the nearby area of the plant reeks of garbage which has made their daily life miserable.
They alleged that most of the vehicles carrying the garbage inside the premises have no number plates. The garbage is also not covered properly as per the standard rules, they added. However, the senior municipal health officer Dr RK Singh informed the locals that the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) had tested the water quality which was found satisfactory. When the commissioner questioned about the irregularities in the plant, the project manager of the plant, MA Saify said that all the garbage carrying vehicles have number plates but he will look into it. He also denied any pungent smell in the area and said that the company regularly sprays enzymes in the plant that leaves no trail of bad smell.
However, the locals opposed these responses and appealed to the commissioner to conduct a surprise inspection of the plant to know the real situation. Taking cognisance of the matter, Ruhela asked the health section to issue a notice to the company. He also assured the locals to conduct a surprise visit to the plant soon.
