Two pilgrims dead, 13 injured in road mishap

Accident occurred in Uttarkashi when pilgrims were returning from Gangotri

Two pilgrims died and thirteen were injured when the Tempo Traveller they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Kopang while they were coming back from Gangotri shrine to Harshil on Sunday night. The 13 injured including the driver were sent to the district hospital for treatment. According to information provided by the disaster management officials, the vehicle uncontrollably fell into a 100 metre deep gorge near Kopang ITBP Camp, located about 15 kilometres from the Gangotri temple. The ITBP, police and army launched a search and rescue operation shortly after being informed about the mishap. The authorities identified the deceased as Alka Bote and Madhavan, both residents of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The search and rescue team pulled out the injured persons from the deep gorge and got them transported to the Uttarkashi district hospital after administering first-aid to them.

According to sources, two of the injured pilgrims are in critical condition and were referred to a private hospital in Dehradun.
