The Forest department team of Corbett Tiger Reserve has finally tranquilised and captured the tiger responsible for the death of a woman in the reserve forest area. The operation was carried out late at night, around 3 AM, after sustained efforts by the authorities.
The victim, Sukhiya Devi, a resident of village Sanwalde, had gone into the reserved forest area on January 2 along with other villagers to collect firewood. During this time, a tiger suddenly attacked the group. The tiger had dragged her deep into the forest, killing her on the spot.
As soon as information about the incident had been received, forest personnel rushed to the area and launched an operation. Aerial firing had been carried out to drive the tiger away following which the woman’s body was recovered. The incident had angered the villagers.
Following the CTR director Saket Badola’s visit, trap cameras had been installed under drone surveillance. Order had been issued to tranquilise and capture the tiger.
After continuous monitoring and coordinated efforts, the tiger was successfully tranquilised and captured late Friday night. The CTR deputy director, Rahul Mishra said that the captured tiger has been shifted to the Dhela Rescue Centre while DNA samples of the tiger are being sent to Dehradun and Hyderabad for examination. “After the DNA reports are received, it will be conclusively confirmed whether the captured tiger was indeed responsible for the attack on the woman,” he added.
