ANPR cameras issue 3.32 lakh challans, collect Rs 8.07 Cr as fines in Dehradun region

The Transport department has issued approximately 3.32 lakh challans and collected Rs 8.07 crore in fines using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across Dehradun, Haridwar and Tehri districts. The regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola provided this information, noting that under the Electronic Enforcement System, ANPR cameras have been installed at 18 locations in Dehradun, Haridwar and Tehri districts as part of efforts to control accidents and enhance road safety. These cameras monitor vehicle activity and generate challans for violations of the Motor Vehicles Act. Violations detected by the ANPR system include speeding, not wearing a helmet, and driving in the wrong direction or lane, among others. Owners of the vehicles receive information about their challans via SMS sent to their registered mobile numbers, she informed.
“So far, around 3.32 lakh vehicles have been challaned through ANPR cameras at 18 locations within the Dehradun region, resulting in a penalty collection of Rs 8.07 crore,” Chamola stated. Notably, this system came into effect in 2023.
Chamola also shared the district-wise breakdown of the 3.32 lakh challans and Rs 8.07 crore collected as fines. In Dehradun, eight ANPR locations issued 154,414 challans, resulting in collection of Rs 3.35 crore as fines. In Haridwar, eight ANPR locations issued 165,544 challans with fines totaling Rs 4.42 crore. In Tehri, two ANPR locations issued 11,985 challans, with fines collected amounting to Rs 0.30 crore. In total, across these three districts, the ANPR system has issued 3, 31,943 challans and collected fines to the tune of Rs 8.07 crore.
The locations of ANPR cameras during the first three phases include: Asharodi, IIP Mohakampur, Kuthal Gate, Kulhal, Kalsi Tiraha, Timli, Katapathar, and Satyanarayan in Dehradun; Shyampur/Chidiyapur, Narsan, Bhagwanpur, Imlikhera, Lakhnauta, Iki Police Chowki, Jhabreda, and Gagalhedi in Haridwar; and Bhadrakali, Tapovan/Brahampuri in Tehri, she said.
Chamola further said that work is underway to install ANPR cameras at 13 additional sensitive locations in the fourth phase. These include 10 locations in Dehradun: Raipur Stadium, Shimla Bypass, Kargi Chowk, 06 No. Puliya, Sai Mandir, Jhajra, AIIMS Crossing Rishikesh, near the RTO office Rishikesh, near Jollygrant Airport, and Ballupur-ONGC Chowk; and three locations in Haridwar: Narsan, Nanhera Anantpur and Raisi.
She said that the department aims to strictly monitor violations of the Motor Vehicles Act and reduce road accidents in the region.
