Bageshwar police act against 300-plus people ahead of by-election

The Bageshwar police have penalised 278 people and taken legal action against 24 people under various Acts in the past one week as part of the intensive checking drive launched after the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into force in the district. The voting for the Bageshwar Assembly by-election is scheduled to be held on September 5 and the police teams are taking preventive measures to maintain peace, law and order as per the guidelines, said the Bageshwar superintendent of police Akshay Konde. He said that the police also took preventive action against 18 people in nine different cases under section 107/116 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). A person was also booked under section 110 (G) of CrPC. The police also took action against four accused in four separate cases under the Goonda Act. One person was also booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for smuggling Charas. Besides this, 116 people were also penalised under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). He said that in the past one week, police imposed 121 challans under the Motor Vehicle Act including 28 court challans. The police also seized four vehicles under the MV Act. The police also imposed 41 challans under the Police Act and 50 licensed arms were also deposited in police stations. The SP said that all police station in-charges have been directed to stay vigilant and take action against any activity that can disturb law and order in the district ahead of the by-election.
