PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

With more than two dozen dengue cases being reported in Dehradun district so far, the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has reserved 40 beds for dengue patients within its premises, according to chief medical superintendent Dr RS Bisht. This year, the early detection of dengue cases in Dehradun district has raised concerns among residents.

Regarding GDMC hospital’s preparations for dengue patients, Dr Bisht said that from April to the present, the hospital administration has collected 230 samples. Out of these, only one case has tested positive for dengue. The patient has been treated at the hospital and has since been discharged. He emphasised that the hospital is fully prepared to handle dengue cases.

The isolation ward for dengue patients includes 40 reserved beds—30 for adults and 10 for pediatric patients, located in the Ayushman building. Dr Bisht added that within the 30 adult beds, there are 10 ICU beds equipped with ventilators. Additionally, two of the 10 pediatric beds are also reserved for ICU care, complete with ventilators.

Dr Bisht stated that the blood bank at GDMC hospital is fully operational. The hospital has the capacity for 400 platelet units and can produce 100 to 250 platelets per day. Additionally, the central government has provided sufficient dengue test kits and in emergency cases, local purchases of the kits have been made, he said.

He emphasised that to ensure the prevention of dengue at the hospital, all uncovered water tanks have been secured and regular fogging and pest control measures are being conducted. Dr Bisht advised people to wear long-sleeved clothing, use mosquito repellents and avoid stagnant water in their surroundings. He also informed  that mosquito traps have been installed at every bed in the dengue isolation ward.
