The BJP organised a ‘social harmony pledge’ dharna in Haldwani on Monday to protest against the statements made by the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the context of the purification row. Senior BJP leaders and functionaries participated in it, held under the leadership of the Nainital district BJP president Pratap Bisht and the Cabinet minister Ram Singh Kaira near Hari Prasad Tamta Park and the PWD office in Tikonia.
The BJP leaders launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of promoting caste politics, insulting dalits and spreading animosity in the society which undermine Uttarakhand’s social unity and brotherhood.
Bisht alleged that having become issueless, the Congress is creating misleading narratives with eyes fixed on the upcoming Assembly elections. “BJP is committed to protecting the social unity and brotherhood of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand,” he asserted.
Echoing him, Kaira said that Uttarakhand holds a unique identity as the land of brave martyrs and the land of gods. “Rahul Gandhi is trying to promote a casteist mentality in the peaceful social environment of the state,” he added.
Nainital MLA Sarita Arya, Haldwani mayor Gajraj Bisht and former mayor Joginder Rautela alleged that the Congress was out to create confusion among the people by raising issues like the purification ceremony held after a meeting.
They were trying to divide the society on the basis of caste and class, they alleged.
