The victory in the Badrinath and Manglaur Assembly by-elections has given a much needed boost to the morale of the Congress leaders and workers in Uttarakhand. The victory in both these by- elections have come after the crushing defeat of the Congress party in the recent Lok Sabha elections where the party candidates lost all the five seats in the State by a margin of 1.5 lakh to 2.5 lakh votes. In fact a string of defeats in the last 10 years had a demoralising effect on the leaders and workers of the Congress party.
The BJP is on a winning streak in the State ever since it bagged all the five parliamentary seats in 2014. It then came to power in the State in the Assembly elections of 2017 and its candidates again secured landslide victories in the parliamentary elections of 2019. Negating the anti- incumbency and the trend the BJP retained its power in the State in the Assembly elections of 2022. The losing streak of Congress continued in the LS elections of 2024 also when the party again lost all the five seats.
The series of losses resulted in defection of many leaders of the party to the fold of BJP in the last ten years. The party sympathisers now hope that the by-election results have given a major boost to the confidence of the party.
The vice president of Uttarakhand Congress Dhirendra Pratap said that unity of senior leaders proved instrumental in victory of party candidates in Manglaur and Badrinath. He said that the countdown of BJP’s removal from power has started and the Congress has hit a comeback trail.
