Pregnant women advised to take precautions amidst unhealthy AQI

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Doctors have advised pregnant women to take precautions to protect themselves from ailments, including respiratory problems, which may arise due to the unhealthy Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. Recently, Dehradun’s AQI has reached levels of 172, 201 and 300, which are considered moderate to unhealthy and even poor. According to doctors, poor AQI can indirectly affect the development of the foetus (infant in mother’s womb).

Senior gynecologist at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr Deepti Singh said that the recent deterioration in air quality is a concern. She said that unhealthy air quality can negatively impact not only the health of children and the elderly but also pregnant women. The unborn child can be indirectly affected as well. Singh emphasised that poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues in pregnant women, including breathing problems and coughs. She has observed that pregnant women at the OPD have been visiting the hospital, experiencing respiratory issues. She recommended that to prevent this, they avoid unnecessary time outdoors. If they must go outside, they should wear masks when possible, use air purifiers at home and consult a doctor immediately if any problems arise, she said.

Senior physician at the District Hospital Dr Praveen Panwar also expressed concern about the rising AQI levels in Dehradun. He reported that while he hasn’t yet seen a significant number of cases among pregnant women related to the AQI, there is potential for them to be affected. Pregnant women may experience throat irritation, dry cough and other respiratory issues.  lung infections and others can also occur, which can, in turn, affect foetal development. To minimise risks, he advises pregnant women to avoid unnecessary outings, wear masks—preferably wet ones—when going outside, stay away from dust and consult a doctor promptly if any symptoms arise, he said.
