Chamber construction issue dominates bar association elections

The elections of the Bar Association Dehradun will be held on February 17. A total of 47 advocates are contesting for 12 different posts. The main contest is being seen on important posts like president, secretary and vice president with the issue of construction of chambers for the advocates being among the major issues in the poll.
Anil Kukreti, Harish Chandra Dobhal, Manmohan Kandwal and Rajeev Sharma are in the race for the post of president while Ajay Bisht, Prabhat Bartwal, Prakash T Pal and Ravinder Kumar Chauhan are contesting for the post of secretary.
For the post of joint secretary, Anil Singh Bisht, Anupama Thakur, Kapil Arora, Pankaj Bhandari, Rakesh Thapliyal and Sudeep Kumar Kandwal are in the fray while Lalit Bhandari and Rajeev Kumar Rohilla are contesting for the post of treasurer.
Amit Dangwal, Rahul Amoli, Rakesh Pal, Vinod Kumar Sagar and Virendra Singh Khurana are in the fray for the post of vice president while Alpana Jadli and Lata Rana are contesting for the post of vice president (Woman).
The issue of construction of chambers for advocates has become the main topic in this election. Lawyers had earlier protested for nearly one month over this demand. The government had given an assurance to the advocates, but no concrete result has come out so far. Presidential candidate Anil Kukreti said that efforts have been going on for the past two years but there has been no result yet.
Some advocates are also raising the issue of better coordination between the bar and the bench, stressing on the need for better understanding and cooperation. The issue of a health insurance scheme for advocates is also among the top priorities of many candidates.
