With another person succumbing in the city bus accident in Dehradun’s Patelnagar area, the death toll rose to two. A 25–year-old Man Singh, a resident of Bareilly, died late Tuesday night while undergoing treatment at Mahant Indresh Hospital. Earlier, the 22-year-old Ahad, a resident of Rajiv Nagar in the Lalpul area, had died.
The accident had occurred on Tuesday when a city bus lost control and ran over five labourers sitting on a footpath near Lalpul. While Ahad had died shortly after the accident, four injured labourers were admitted to Mahant Indresh Hospital. The circle officer (Sadar) Ankit Kandari said that Man Singh had later succumbed to his injuries, while the remaining three injured labourers continue to receive treatment. “Officials completed the inquest and postmortem formalities on Wednesday morning before handing over Singh’s body to his family members. A case has already been registered against the bus driver under relevant sections of law,” he said.
Kandari further said that the bus driver is still undergoing treatment. “Medical samples have been collected and authorities are awaiting the report. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings. During preliminary questioning, the driver claimed he was suffering from a medical condition and suddenly experienced an epileptic seizure causing him to lose control of the vehicle,” he said, adding that they are now verifying the claim by gathering information from the driver’s family members and examining his medical history and health records.
“All aspects of the case are being investigated. We will verify whether the driver has any pre-existing condition that could have affected his ability to operate the bus safely,” the CO shared.
