Following a fatal bus accident in Patel Nagar that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to four others, deputy transport commissioner Shailesh Tiwari led a spot inspection of the site on Wednesday. Under his leadership, officials from the Lead Agency inspected the accident location in the Patel Nagar area of Dehradun district.

The officials informed that the team gathered preliminary information and further inquiries are underway. “There is a slight turn near the accident site where the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the main road and onto the sidewalk, resulting in the tragic incident. The cause of the accident is under thorough investigation and officials are gathering information about the driver’s medical history,’’ they said.

Officials also said that the accident site was a gathering point of daily wage labourers. Similar locations in Dehradun city, such as Ghantaghar, Rispana and Kanwali Road, also serve as gathering spots for workers seeking employment. To enhance safety, it would be appropriate to designate a covered enclosure or compound for these labourers to wait in a secure environment, they said.  The inspection team also emphasised the need for a thorough technical inspection of all city buses and health check-ups for their drivers to prevent such incidents in the future. Additionally, the team has recommended a sensitisation programme to raise driver awareness regarding pedestrian safety.

Notably, the ARTO and RI have been directed to commence the technical inspection phase immediately and to coordinate with the Dehradun chief medical officer to plan health check-ups for drivers and conductors at Rangers Ground.
