PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Chamoli

Coming close on the heels of the widespread destruction in Dehradun following cloudburst-triggered downpour, a cloudburst-induced deluge struck Nandnagar region in Chamoli district late Wednesday night. At least 10 people are reported to have been missing.

The sudden downpour and landslide rubble have wreaked havoc in several villages like Fali Kuntari, Senti Kuntari, Bhainswada and Dhurma. In Nandnagar’s Kuntari Laga Fali ward, six houses were completely flattened by the crashing debris. The district officials said that while at least 10 people were missing two had been rescued by the villagers and relief teams.

Rescue operations are in full swing. As soon as the disaster was reported, SDRF teams reached Nandprayag while an NDRF unit was dispatched from Gauchar. The district administration has also rushed medical teams and three 108 emergency ambulances to the affected areas.

Heavy rains also damaged five houses in Dhurma village under Nandnagar tehsil though no casualties have been reported there. Meanwhile, the rising water level of the river Moksh has left the locals panicky.

Chamoli district magistrate, Sandeep Tiwari said that relief and rescue operations are being carried out on war footing with teams tirelessly searching for the missing. Residents of the affected villages have been advised to remain alert and move to higher, safer locations.
