The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the officials concerned to introduce the ‘One Jail-One Product’ concept in all the prisons located across Uttarakhand while chairing a meeting on the functioning of Jail Development Board held at the Secretariat here on Thursday.
The officials informed that the bakery units in Haridwar, Almora, Sitarganj and Haldwani jails have earned about Rs 12 lakh. This aside, a cowshed in the Sitarganj open jail has also earned around Rs 10 lakh.
Dhami said that the State should create its own model for developing prisons. He also directed that the products made in prisons be used in government offices. Also, he asked the officials to inspect the quality of the food served in jails from time to time and stressed on regular skill development programmes to be organised for inmates to help them learn useful trades. Training through ITIs would also be arranged inside the jails, he said.
It was decided at the meeting that laundry machines would be installed in several jails, including the Central Jail Sitarganj, district jails in Almora, Pauri and Tehri and sub-jails in Haldwani and Roorkee. The officials said that installing such machines in Dehradun and Haridwar jails had shown good results earlier.
