CM hails Supreme Court verdict on demonetisation

Tuesday, 03 January 2023 | PNS | Dehradun

Terming the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) on the demonetisation as historic, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Monday that the SC order has endorsed the decision taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on demonetisation.

Dhami said that by putting its stamp on the demonetisation decision the SC has given a message that PM Modi’s step was in the interest of the country. He said that the demonetisation decision was taken with an objective of ending the black money and everyone welcomed it. In an oblique reference to the Congress party, the CM said that the party which has ruled the country for 55 years had cramps in its stomach and similar was the condition of some opposition parties.

Dhami said that SC in its order has clearly said that the government and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) held interactions on the subject before the demonetisation decision which punctures the claim of the opposition parties that the decision was arbitrary. He claimed that the decision was within the provisions and was part of a planning against the terror funding, black money, tax evasion and problem of fake currency.

A constitutional bench of the Supreme Court comprising five judges termed the demonetisation decision taken by Narendra Modi as valid in a 4-1 verdict on Monday. The BJP government on November 8, 2016 had demonetised the currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations in the country.
