Tensions erupted at a private nursing home following the death of a woman and her newborn, forcing the chief medical officer, Dehradun, Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma to constitute a committee to investigate the matter. The action came after the family of the deceased woman had alleged medical negligence by the nursing home’s doctors.
According to the sources, as per the members of the deceased’s family, Nikita, wife of Satendra Bisht from Indira Puram MDDA Colony, was receiving treatment at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital since she became pregnant. Around 11:30 PM on May 29, she experienced labour pains and was rushed to the nearby nursing home.
The family members claimed that the hospital staff had reassured them initially that everything was fine. However, around 2:30 AM, they were informed that surgery was necessary. Nikita delivered a baby, who was dead at the time of delivery.
The following morning, at 8 AM, when relatives arrived with blood donors, they learned that Nikita’s condition had suddenly turned critical, and she had been referred to another hospital. “The doctors there found that a severe infection had spread throughout her body. She later died. We are certain that the negligence of nursing home doctors led to these tragic deaths,” said a family member.
Angered by these deaths, the family members along with others had staged a demonstration at the CMO’s office and submitted a memorandum demanding action in this matter on Wednesday.
In response, Sharma informed that a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter. “The committee has been instructed to submit its report within a week. Based on the findings, appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
