Angered over the paddy not being weighed at the procurement centres and the lack of payment, the local farmers from Udham Singh Nagar district, led by the Kichha MLA, Tilak Raj Behad, demonstrated at the Collectorate and served a memorandum to ADM, Pankaj Upadhyay. In the memorandum, Behad stated that despite the divisional food controller of Kumaon division having fixed the limit of paddy to be procured at each centre and set Rs 2,500 per quintal, the paddy being sent to the procurement centres were not being weighed.
He added that with the connivance of some individuals, paddy was being sent directly to rice mills, indicating widespread corruption. He demanded the exploitation of farmers be stopped immediately.
