The Congress staged protest demonstrations in all districts of the State on Sunday against its leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha. Addressing the protesting party workers in Dehradun, former chief minister Harish Rawat claimed that under the BJP government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi the constitution and democracy in Indian are under threat. He said that various BJP leaders including PM Modi had insulted members of the Gandhi-Nehru family and made questionable statements against them. He questioned when the Modi government will act against such leaders and if PM Modi will contemplate on his own actions. He alleged that the Central government was targeting opposition leaders. Though the Centre is trying to intimidate the opposition leaders, the Congress will not get scared of such tactics, he said. “The Central government is stooping to such actions to silence the opposition in order to divert the attention of the public. Rahul Gandhi is the only one openly raising the failures of the Modi government at every platform which is why he is being targeted. The opposition leaders are not being allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha lest they expose the failures of the government,” opined Rawat.
Former PCC president Pritam Singh said that the Congress is an ideology and not just a political party. Since its creation, the party has undertaken movements periodically against social evils in the interests of the nation. The party is continuing this tradition even today, he said. Singh alleged that those in power today are attempting to weaken the communal harmony in the nation while the Congress under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is fighting strongly against such attempts.
Former minister Hira Singh Bisht alleged that the Central government is exhibiting a dictatorial attitude. Under the BJP’s rule, those demanding their rights are being threatened. Attempts are being made to misuse the Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation to intimidate the opposition leaders and stifle the voice of the public, which the Congress will not tolerate. Targeting the State government, he said that the aims for which the Statehood movement was undertaken have not yet been achieved.
The party’s State vice president Mathura Dutt Joshi, general secretary (Organisation) Vijay Saraswat and chief spokesperson Garima Mahara Dasauni also expressed their views during the protest.
