Congress & independents dominate local bodies in Chamoli
PNS | JYOTIRMATH
The Bharatiya Janata Party could not dominate the local body elections in Chamoli district. While independent and Congress candidates performed well, the BJP candidates managed to win in two local bodies. BJP candidates won in Gopeshwar and Karnprayag while Congress candidates won in Jyotirmath, Gairsain, Tharali, Nandprayag and Nandanagar. Independent candidates won in Pipalkoti and Pokhri. While BJP’s Ganesh Chandra Shah won by 84 votes in Karnprayag, Congress’ Mohan Bhandari was elected chairman of the Gairsain Nagar Panchayat by a margin of 460 votes.
Independent candidate Arti Nawani won in Pipalkoti, Congress candidate Sunita Rawat won in Tharali, Prithvi Singh Rautela of Congress won in Nandprayag, Deveshwari Shah of the Congress won in Jyotirmath while independent candidate Sohan Lal won by one vote in Pokhri. Following the victory of the Congress candidate in Jyotirmath, the party workers gathered on major intersections to celebrate. The Congress candidate won despite the party not sending any star campaigner to seek votes. The local MLA was the only prominent party leader who campaigned here for the Congress candidate.
