About two months after it was started the construction of 15 prefabricated structures for the land subsidence affected families in Joshimath is yet to be completed. Out of the 15 structures being built at Dhak village, the construction of 10 has been completed while finishing touches are being given to the remaining structures. Meanwhile, some of the affected families who have received compensation for their damaged homes are still living in hotels and have said that they will have to remain in hotels till they receive compensation for their land also.

The construction of 15 prefabricated structures for the disaster affected families of Joshimath was started in Dhak village on January 26. While 10 of the structures are ready, finishing touches are being given to the remaining five structures. At the same time, some of the affected families living in hotels who have received compensation for their damaged homes have said that they will have to continue to stay in the hotels till they are compensated for their land also. Disaster affected resident Digambar Bisht said that the prefabricated structures being built in Dhak village are about 10 kilometres from Joshimath town due to which children are facing inconvenience in travelling to and from their schools. It would have been better if the prefabricated structures were built on the Horticulture department’s land instead of Dhak, he opined. Another disaster affected local resident Deepak Rawat said that it has become difficult to find rented accommodations in the town due to which they will have to remain in hotels till the authorities compensate them for their lands too. For now, the authorities have extended the time period of hotel stay for the affected families to April 30. On the other hand, the Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has stated that if the government doesn’t consider its demands, it will hold a market bandh and chakka jam on April 27. The Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti is demanding that the entire Joshimath should be declared a disaster affected area, stopping execution of the NTPC project and rehabilitation of the disaster affected families. The group has also sent a memorandum to the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in this regard.
