Court parking littered by garbage amidst apathy

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Garbage accumulation at the parking area of the court premises in Dehradun has triggered concern among advocates and visitors, who allege irregular waste lifting and lack of sanitation monitoring at the premises. Heaps of plastic waste, paper and other garbage were seen lying in the open near parked vehicles, creating unhygienic conditions for litigants, lawyers and daily visitors. Advocate Rajat Dua said that the situation reflects serious lapses in civic maintenance at an important public institution. “If places like the Dehradun court are not being maintained properly, one can only imagine the condition in other parts of the city. This clearly reflects negligence at multiple levels,” he said.

Criminal law advocate Sudarshana Chettri also raised concerns over the lack of regular cleaning arrangements at the site. “The parking area is in a very poor state and garbage lies in the open for days. There is no proper system in place for regular cleaning or monitoring. Such conditions are not acceptable on a court’s premises,” she said. Chettri also said that the toilets in the court premises are not all maintained and are unusable, especially for women.

Advocates further alleged that sanitation staff remain absent for long periods and no alternative arrangements appear to have been made in their absence. Visitors like Mahima Khan also expressed concern. Unhygienic surroundings at such a key public facility raise concerns about sanitation management in the city, Khan said.
