3-day int’l conference on Himalayas starts at KU

A three-day international conference on the topic of ‘Geodynamic Evolution of the Himalayas: Crustal Structure, Climate, Resources and Disasters’ started under the joint aegis of the Department of Geology of Kumaun University and the Geological Society of India, Bengaluru. Eminent scientists, researchers and scholars from Italy, America, Nepal and India participated in the conference. The KU sources said that the objective of the conference is to encourage in-depth scientific discussion on the complex geodynamic structure of the Himalayas, climate change, conservation of natural resources and challenges related to disaster management.

In his welcome address, Prof Santosh Kumar of the Department of Geology, KU, stated that this conference is an important step toward understanding the geological evolution and environmental changes of the Himalayas.

During the event, an eminent geologist and seismologist, Harsh K Gupta highlighted the earthquake trends and potential risks in the Himalayan region.

Professor Rodolfo Carosi from Italy stated that studying the Himalayas is crucial for understanding the Earth’s structural processes on a global scale. He emphasized the need to further strengthen research collaboration between Indian and Italian scientists.

In his presidential address, the vice- chancellor, Prof Dewan S Rawat said that this conference would become a powerful platform for scientific collaboration, innovation and dialogue which would provide concrete direction in the field of Himalayan environment and disaster mitigation.
