Family alleges district hospital’s negligence & delay in referral for youth’s death

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Uttarkashi

Family members of a youth have alleged that negligence of the authorities in the Uttarkashi district hospital resulted in the death of the young man on Monday. The family members and locals have expressed strong discontent at the attitude of the authorities, alleging that though the district hospital is viewed mainly as a referral centre centre, the doctors did not refer the patient to a higher centre on time, which resulted in his death.

According to sources, Deepak Rawat (30) was brought to the district hospital on Monday afternoon with a chest injury. His family members alleged that the doctors stated that the x-ray was normal but his condition began deteriorating late in the afternoon. They say that they requested the district hospital authorities to refer him to Dehradun and provide either an air ambulance or an ambulance to transport him. However, this was not done and he expired on Monday evening. They alleged that negligence and the lack of proper facilities at the hospital resulted in his death.

Chief medical officer Dr BS Rawat said that the hospital had sought a helicopter ambulance but it could not be facilitated due to inclement weather. He said that the patient had been checked too but unfortunately did not survive. If there are any undesirable factors responsible for this, the same will be checked, he said.

At a time when the State government is preparing for the start of the Char Dham Yatra, locals point out that the condition of the district hospital in Uttarkashi, where Gangotri and Yamunotri are located, makes it appear as if little has been done to improve the situation here.
