DDMA training: Girls gain disaster management skill

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Uttarkashi organised a one-day disaster awareness training programme at Maneri in the border district at the initiative of the district magistrate Prashant Arya and the additional district magistrate Mukta Mishra.

The departmental personnel, including 30 girl trainees- undergoing training under the district Tourism department’s seven-day Basic Kayaking Foundation Course (girls)- were provided with important theoretical information and practical exercises related to disaster management. The training was conducted by DDMA Uttarkashi’s master trainer Mastan Bhandari and QRT Instructor Avtar Singh Rawat.

In the training, detailed information was given about the nature and types of disasters like earthquake, landslide, flash flood, forest fire, safety measures before, during and after the disaster, satellite phone operation, use of search and rescue equipment, construction and manual operation of improvised stretcher, first aid and CPR techniques, as well as state and district level emergency toll-free numbers.

During the programme, pamphlets related to disaster awareness were distributed and the participants were informed about BhuDev app and were also made to download it on their mobile phones so that they can get quick help in case of emergency in future.

The DDMA officials said that such training programmes would raise the level of the girls’ understanding of disaster preparedness and self-reliance, which would help reduce loss of life during disasters.
