The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is close to completing the provisional State capital’s first municipal food court, being developed near Maharana Pratap Sports College on the Raipur–Thano Road.

The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the construction work has reached the final stage and the facility is expected to open for the public soon. The project has been taken up under the guidance of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and aims to provide an organised and safe food space for residents and visitors, she said.

Bansal informed that a total of 31 shops are being developed at the food court. The facility will include open dining areas, seating arrangements, sanitation facilities and toilets. A light show and a walking gallery are also part of the design to make the location more attractive for visitors, she added.

The civic body officials further stated that the location was chosen considering the heavy movement of vehicles on the Thano–Airport route. Adequate parking spaces have also been developed to manage traffic and accommodate visitors. The municipal commissioner added that the initiative is part of the corporation’s effort to develop organised food spaces in the city. She said that similar models have been implemented in cities such as Indore, where structured food courts have become popular public spaces.Bansal added that the beautification work and installation of signage at the site are currently in the final phase. MCD officials said that the food court is expected to emerge as a new food hub where people can enjoy a range of cuisines, including local street food from Uttarakhand, in a structured environment away from traffic congestion. The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities for local youth and add a new attraction for visitors to the city, officials added.
