The primary responsibility of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) is to provide timely assistance, legal advice and justice to every victimised woman, said chairwoman Kusum Kandwal while chairing the first board meeting of the financial year 2026-27 on Wednesday. In the meeting, several important decisions were made unanimously after a thorough discussion on women’s safety, rights protection, public awareness, strengthening the functioning of the commission and a comprehensive action plan for the coming year.

Addressing the meeting, Kandwal said that the commission is committed to protecting women’s rights in coordination with the government and administration. Women’s confidence in the commission’s working style has steadily increased, as women from remote, mountainous, rural and border areas of the State are now approaching the commission with their complaints and petitions, she said.

Kandwal further informed that, in light of this increasing workload and the expectations of women, the board meeting unanimously passed a proposal to create 10 new positions within the commission. Additionally, the board approved a proposal to appropriately increase the honorarium for commission members, as well as the salaries of sanitation workers, she said.

The USCW chairwoman said that to ensure the active presence of the commission in all 13 districts of Uttarakhand, district-wise responsibilities were assigned to the vice presidents of the commission. The members will conduct regular public hearings, women’s awareness programmes, inspections of One Stop Centres and work related to women’s rights protection in their respective districts.
