Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and politicians across the spectrum have reacted to the arrest of Uttarakhand native Keshav Negi who was working as a cook in the hotel where a devastating fire claimed 21 lives in the Malviya Nagar area of Delhi on June 3. While investigators believe the employee’s negligence may have played a significant role in triggering or worsening the blaze, many in Uttarakhand are questioning why none of the officials responsible for serious lapses have not faced similar action yet.

On Sunday, Dhami shared on social media that he had talked to the Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta regarding Negi’s arrest. He said that Gupta had assured that no innocent person will face injustice, adding that the investigation will be based completely on facts and evidence. Dhami said that he is assured that the Delhi government and the agencies concerned will bring the truth to the fore through an impartial investigation. He also talked to Negi’s daughter Kanishka Negi and assured all possible assistance to the family. “Our government stands in support of all the Uttarakhand natives living in different parts of the nation,” the CM said.

Similarly, Haridwar MP and former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat said that he talked to the Garhwal MP Anil Baluni and lawyers in Delhi after learning of Negi’s arrest. Rawat then talked to Negi’s daughter who informed that a lawyer had been hired and that Negi’s bail application will be heard in court on Monday. The Haridwar MP said that he had assured all necessary legal and other assistance to the Negi family. He further informed that Baluni had talked to senior police officials in Delhi to “communicate our sentiments” for ensuring that Negi is not unjustly framed in the case. “We are confident that Negi will get justice,” Rawat said.

Meanwhile, the Pradesh Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal questioned the Delhi government for arresting Negi while officials actually responsible for lapses leading to the tragedy are yet to face any action. In a video message shared on social media, Godiyal said that it appears as if Negi is being made the sacrificial goat in the cast. He questioned why the government officials who were responsible for various violations of the law which led to the tragedy had not faced action yet.
