In response to the increasing challenges of textile waste, the Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation, in collaboration with Anko Sourcing and Vaapsi—a brand of BTR Global—has completed the first phase of the “Textile Collection and Recycling Campaign.”
The campaign took place from January to February 2026 across 20 schools in Dehradun, involving over 1,000 students.
The founder of SDC Foundation Anoop Nautiyal informed that the campaign aimed to promote environmental awareness, responsible consumption habits and recycling practices among students. Throughout the programme, students learned about alternative methods for dealing with old clothes, such as reusing, repairin, or recycling them instead of discarding them. As part of the initiative, old garments were collected from several schools and students actively participated in sorting and categorising the collected clothes, he said.
He added that According to available data, India generates around 7,800 kilotons of textile waste annually. If not managed properly, this waste ends up in landfills, drains and rivers, posing significant environmental and health risks.
Dinesh Chandra from the SDC Foundation highlighted that the issue of textile waste is rapidly escalating and requires active societal participation for effective resolution.
The second phase of the campaign is scheduled to run from the last week of March through April.
