Traffic chaos hits Dehradun markets ahead of Eid & Navratri

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Shoppers in Dehradun’s major markets, particularly along the stretch from Hanuman Chowk to Paltan Bazaar, have expressed concerns about increasing traffic congestion caused by the unrestricted entry of four-wheelers and three-wheelers. They claimed that despite the increased footfall of shoppers due to the ongoing Jhanda Mela and preparations for Navratri and Eid-ul-Fitr, the presence of four-wheelers in the market area is exacerbating traffic congestion, causing difficulties for shoppers using two-wheelers or walking.

The shoppers have appealed to the authorities to ensure effective traffic management during festivals, specifically by restricting four-wheelers and three-wheelers in market areas. Notably, significant traffic congestion was observed in the area, leading to frustration among shoppers, who often had to navigate through traffic jams for 30 minutes to an hour.

Shopper Simran Sachdeva said that the traffic situation in this market area has worsened over time. Although foot traffic has increased due to the ongoing Jhanda Mela, Navratri, and Eid, the presence of four-wheelers has further escalated congestion. She said that shoppers using two-wheelers or those walking face significant difficulties under these conditions. She urged that if the authorities cannot routinely enforce a ban on vehicle entry in the market, they should ensure that such restrictions are implemented during peak occasions.

“I have been stuck in traffic for 30 minutes while shopping for the Navratri festival. Frustrated by the congestion caused by four-wheelers, I’ve opted to go back home and shop at nearby stores or online instead. The authorities should address this issue and enforce restrictions on vehicle entry, especially during festivals,” said another shopper, Manu Pandey.

Apart from this, one of the shopkeepers said that traffic congestion in the market due to the entry of said vehicles is a daily occurrence and sometimes leads to arguments among commuters. On such occasions, the entry of four-wheelers has significantly contributed to the increased traffic congestion.
