The Dehradun district administration has started to mark the houses on the banks of Bindal and Rispana rivers which might be potentially at risk due to rising water levels following rainfall. Every year, the water level of these rivers rises during the rains which results in flooded houses in the slums along the riverbed. Informing about it, the sub divisional magistrate (SDM) of Dehradun, Gopal Ram Binwal said that the low lying areas along the riverbeds of the Rispana and Bindal rivers generally get flooded during the monsoon season owing to which, the administration has issued an order to identify such houses or establishments near these rivers which could be potentially in danger during heavy rain.
He said that the officials concerned have been instructed to mark all such houses and provide the list to the administration as soon as possible. Talking about shifting the affected families residing in these slums when required, Binwal informed that the district administration has made the arrangements to shift the families temporarily. “We have a proper list of the places where the affected families would be shifted in case the need arises in the city. Places like Rain Basera of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) and some schools are among the few places which would be used for the temporary stay of the affected families. After the situation gets normal, the families would be able to return to their homes,” said Binwal.
Meanwhile, the administration also sent a letter recently to the MCD to mark the dilapidated buildings in the city and shift the dwellers of such buildings to a safe place. However, the corporation has not responded to the administration so far. The city magistrate, Kusum Chauhan informed that the administration would take action if she does not receive any response in the next few days from the corporation.
