The Dehradun district administration has selected the land for the resettlement of about 20 families of Vikasnagar’s Jakhan village where 10 houses had collapsed after a landslide in August. The district magistrate Sonika has received a proposal for the resettlement of the affected families in Vikasnagar’s Rudrapur Colony and after completing the required procedure, the administration will allocate the land to the families. The district administration started searching for new locations to rehabilitate the affected families a week after the occurrence of the landslide when the report of the geological survey of the affected area stated the landslide affected area to be no longer safe for habitation. According to the report, several geomorphological features were found near the site indicating a tectonically active area, that can cause subsidence there. Following this, the administration started finding the land and showed the suitable locations to the affected families but they did not agree to them. Due to this and other factors, the land selection process got delayed, as per the DM. She said, “I have received a proposal for a land in Vikasnagar’s Rudrapur Colony and the families have also given their nod after about two months. Besides this, the Gram Panchayat of the village has also given its permission for the resettlement there. The administration is completing the necessary procedures. We will hopefully allocate the land soon to the families for resettlement.” The DM said that after the allocation of the land, the district administration will issue about Rs four lakh in installments to the affected families for the construction of the houses. “The families will take care of the construction of their houses on their own but the administration will ensure that the money is spent on the construction of the houses on the allocated land,” added Sonika.
