Doon caterers hit hard by commercial LPG cylinder crunch

MANSI BHAMBRI/Dehradun

Many food caterers in Dehradun have expressed their concerns about their businesses, which are being directly impacted by the disruption in supply of commercial LPG gas cylinders. In recent days, gas agencies have been refusing to supply commercial cylinders to the individuals concerned following directions from the authorities. They claimed that this lack of availability has directly affected caterers’ businesses, forcing them to cancel menu orders for birthday parties and other events, as their caterer’s business is all-season instead of depending on a particular season. They emphasised that authorities should prepare in advance for such crises instead of waiting for a situation to escalate.

Caterer Kesar Singh Rawat said that the supply of commercial cylinders has almost stopped in the past few days, which is a major concern for caterers like him. His business has been directly affected by the halt in commercial cylinder supply. Rawat explained that while he could currently fulfill orders with the limited stock he has available, he has had to shorten the menu offerings, which has led customers to place less amount for this. He added that although he has some commercial cylinders left, these are about to finish and as a result, he’s now cancelling advance orders. He expressed concern about the financial impact this situation is having and suggested that authorities should balance the supply of both commercial and domestic cylinders instead of stopping commercial cylinder supply altogether for businesses like his.

“Currently, my catering business has been running because I always stock two to three cylinders for my work, which is a standard practice for me. However, in three to four days, these cylinders will run out. Considering this, I have to cancel all my advance orders,” said another caterer Rajeev Singh.

He said that not only will the work of caterers be affected, but the workers who depend on them will also suffer due to this issue. He urged the authorities to prepare in advance to prevent any negative impact on citizens.

Caterer Rahul Kumar also voiced similar concerns and urged the authorities to consider some solution for individuals who utilise commercial cylinders, as the ongoing supply issues are adversely affecting their business.
