Dumper hits a man, kills him on the spot

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

In a road accident in Dehradun on Wednesday morning, a 50-year-old man was killed.  The deceased, identified as Sakal Dev Sahni, was standing on the roadside on Kanwali Road when a gravel-laden dumper, coming from Ballupur Chowk, knocked him down.  He was killed on the spot.

The eyewitnesses said that the dumper was traveling at a high speed on a steep slope and the driver lost control of the vehicle. After the accident, the dumper stopped after hitting a nearby wall; the driver then fled, abandoning the vehicle. The body was identified by his nephew Jitendra Sahni.

As soon as the incident was reported, anger spread in the area, and a large number of people gathered at the scene. The mob blocked Kanwali Road by placing the body in the middle of the road. The Tires were burnt, too. The road remained blocked, disrupting traffic for about an hour and a half.

Local people alleged that dumpers often pass through this road at high speed in the morning, but the police and administration do not pay attention. The members of the deceased’s family along with the locals kept squatting on the road, demanding that an official from the administration reach the scene and announce compensation. They also demanded early arrest of the dumper driver.

The Kotwali Nagar in-charge, Hariom Chauhan said that upon receiving the information of the accident, police had reached the spot and tried to pacify the angry locals.  “CCTV cameras are being checked to trace the dumper driver,” he said, adding that he would be arrested soon.
