The monsoon session of the Assembly being held at Bhararisain commenced on a stormy note with the Opposition Congress MLAs trooping into the well of the House while venting anger on what they called the State government’s dismal failure in disaster management and the crumbling law and order. During the protest, the papers were torn, mikes and tablets were broken and the secretary’s table was toppled.
As soon as the proceedings began, the opposition MLAs demanded dismissal of Nainital’s district magistrate and senior superintendent of police while sloganeering at the top of their voice.
The State Parliamentary Affairs minister Subodh Uniyal accused the Congress of insulting the House and demanded the MLAs be suspended from the day’s proceedings. He dubbed disruption of the House’s proceedings as amounting to contempt for the spirit of democracy.
The proceedings of the House had to be adjourned thrice during the day, but still the situation remained far from normal with the Congress MLAs insisting on a discussion on law and order under Rule 310.
Expressing displeasure, the Speaker described the disruption as ‘extremely sad and unfortunate’.
