Uttarakhand governor lieutenant general ( retd) Gurmit Singh has  said that the true purpose of education should not be merely to obtain employment but to foster self-reliance, innovation and entrepreneurship among the students. He was addressing the second convocation of the Core University, Roorkee on Tuesday. He exhorted the students to play an active role in nation-building. He said that convocation is not merely an occasion to obtain a degree but rather the beginning of a journey from self-awareness to national awareness.

The governor called upon the students to become job creators rather than job seekers and urged them to pursue start-ups. Delivering the mantra of ‘Nation First’, he stated that the path to a developed India will be paved more by  an aware and committed youth than by government schemes. He urged students to keep the nation paramount even in their dreams and to enhance India’s glory through their actions, character, and determination.

The governor said that today is an era of technology and innovation. India is advancing rapidly in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space technology, cyber security, semiconductor and nanotechnology. In such a situation, youth must move forward with a balance between tradition and modernity. Referring to Indian civilization, the Vedas, Puranas, and spiritual heritage, he said that character building is equally important as technical proficiency.
