Young, adults and the elderly are all worried about their physical fitness during the monsoon season. Experts point out that healthy eating habits and regular exercises at home may help one stay fit and healthy during the rainy season. Monsoon increases the risk of being exposed to various microbes.  So, it is difficult to stay energetic during the rainy season. Physical fitness must be supplemented with mental fitness. That is why the health experts stress both on physical exercises and yoga/ meditation.

Commenting on the lack of physical activity in the rainy season, a local citizen Shivansh Upadhay said, “It’s very hard to follow the daily routine of exercises during the monsoon. I have a habit of going to the gym and taking evening walks daily. But when it rains I have to stay indoors. It impacts my health negatively and this is what worries me during the monsoon.”

A senior citizen Gulshan Kumar echoed the same view and said that rain plays spoilsport for his routine walks in the morning and evening. “This lack of physical movement during the monsoon not just makes me physically weak and mentally gloomy but also vulnerable to diseases,” he added.

Asked to comment on the rupture in the physical exercises routine for the people during this season, a public health consultant Mahesh Bhatt said, “I agree that it is hard to follow the daily routine of physical fitness exercises during this time. But without venturing out, they may do exercises at home. This would keep them    mentally and physically fit.  This applies not just to the youngsters but to the adults and the elderly also. Aerobics is the best form of exercise for the people. It helps muscular flexibility and cardio-vascular wellness.”

For the senior citizens, he suggests light physical exercises like ascending and descending stairs a number of times. “They should also eat light food and shun spicy ones. Besides, they may do yoga/meditation daily for an hour or so to keep themselves mentally agile and cheerful,” he added.

Gym instructor Satyam told this correspondent that the number of his clients comes down drastically when the monsoon peaks.  “However, while staying indoors they may do jump jacks, pushups, yoga and Surya namaskar.  These are effective forms of physical fitness exercises. Eating light also helps one stay strong during the monsoon,” he said.
