In depth deliberations were held in a meeting at the State secretariat on Thursday on the proposed Uttarakhand Sanskrit Commission. Sanskrit scholars, educationists, vice-chancellors and experts from different parts the country gave their suggestions on the proposed Commission’s structure, objectives, scope of work and future roadmap.
Chairing the meeting, secretary, Sanskrit Education, Deepak Kumar presented an overview of the current status of Sanskrit language and Sanskrit education in Uttarakhand.
He said that the State government is committed to the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit and has undertaken several innovative initiatives in this direction. He said that on January 7, 2010, Sanskrit was accorded the status of the second official language of Uttarakhand.
The secretary said that during the International Sanskrit Conference organised by Uttarakhand Sanskrit University on December 1, 2025, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had emphasised the need to establish Uttarakhand Sanskrit Commission. Accordingly, suggestions were invited from Sanskrit universities, scholars, academicians and institutions across the country to prepare a comprehensive framework for the proposed Commission.
“A key recommendation that emerged during the deliberations was that the proposed Commission should not remain confined merely to the preservation of the Sanskrit language, but should also actively promote the Indian knowledge tradition, Vedic studies, research, innovation, skill development, entrepreneurship and employment-oriented Sanskrit education,” he said.
In the meeting the participants recommended that a coordinated national action plan for the promotion and propagation of Sanskrit should be prepared with the active participation of VCs, secretaries of Sanskrit Academies and eminent scholars from across the country.
