A 23-year-old woman NEET aspirant was found hanging in her room in Chandrabani Colony, Dehradun, on Tuesday morning. Police said they have found a suicide note, on which was written ‘I love you Mummy-Papa’, from her room. Notably, though preparing for the NEET examination for a long time, she remained unsuccessful. The deceased was identified as Riya Kumari.
Police reached the spot upon being informed by her family members, brought the body down and sent it for post-mortem. A senior police officer said that they had taken the note into custody and are verifying its handwriting and contents.
The family members of the deceased woman said that Riya wanted to build a career in the medical field and had been preparing for the NEET examination for a long time. “She appeared for the medical entrance examination earlier but was unable to secure admission. Serious about her studies, she remained stressed,” a family member said.
Former councillor Hari Prasad Bhatt who is said to be close to the father of deceased said that Riya had told her father that she was expecting a good score in the NEET examination conducted on May 3 but the paper got leaked and she was preparing for the re-examination.
The police circle officer (Sadar), Ankit Kandari said that police are recording statements of the family members and examining all evidence. “The post-mortem report is awaited and further investigation is underway to determine whether any other factors were involved in the case,” he added.
Notably, four students allegedly died by committing suicide in different parts of the country after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination following a paper leak earlier. A re-examination is now scheduled for June 21.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over academic pressure and mental stress faced by students preparing for competitive examinations.
