The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has stepped up the repair of streetlights damaged during the monsoon, with the civic body aiming to improve lighting across the city ahead of Deepawali. The corporation is receiving around 250 to 300 complaints related to faulty street lights every day.
The MCD has already installed around 4,000 new streetlight poles across the city. Another 4,000 lights are expected to be received by coming Wednesday, following which their installation will begin in different parts of Dehradun.
The MCD light inspector Rajeet Rana said that priority would be given to newly included areas where several roads and lanes remain poorly illuminated. Locations prone to road accidents and areas where complaints related to criminal activities have been received will also be given priority. The civic body will focus on improving lighting not only on major roads but also on internal streets, connecting roads and other vulnerable stretches.
Continuous rainfall during the monsoon damaged streetlights and electrical components at several locations, leading to an increase in complaints of non-functional lights. The municipal teams have now been deployed to address the complaints and restore damaged lights on a priority basis.
The corporation has set a target of improving streetlight coverage across as much of the city as possible before the festival. Rana said that better illumination would help improve visibility for motorists and pedestrians and provide better lighting in dark and vulnerable areas.
