People caught dumping garbage in rivers or along riverbanks will face FIRs, the Dehradun district magistrate Ashish Chauhan said on Saturday. He also directed officials to identify unauthorised dumping sites immediately and take action against agencies responsible for poor waste management.
The DM said there would be no tolerance for negligence in solid waste management and directed officials to strictly follow Supreme Court guidelines.
All urban local bodies were asked to regularly inspect dumping yards in their areas. Unauthorised dumping sites must be identified and the agency responsible for the area will be held accountable, officials said.
Chauhan also ordered stronger monitoring near rivers. Nets or barriers should be installed at places where waste is likely to be dumped into rivers. He also directed officials to monitor septic tankers and ensure that waste collected by them is treated at designated sewage treatment plants before disposal.
Officials were also directed to identify bulk waste generators such as large establishments. Proper segregation of wet and dry waste must be ensured at these locations.
The DM said the move aims to prevent river pollution and improve waste management in Dehradun. Officials have also been asked to conduct regular inspections and upload photographic evidence of waste management work every month.
