Man breaks bank shutter locks, caught hiding inside before theft

An attempted burglary was reported at Bank of Baroda near Dena Bank Chowk on Balbir Road in Dalanwala area of Dehradun on Friday. The accused was caught inside the bank before he could take anything, police said. 

According to the police, a team from Dalanwala was conducting checks in the area late on Friday night when it received information that the bank’s shutter was open and its glass was broken. The team reached the bank and found that the locks of the shutter had been broken. The police searched the building and found a man hiding inside. He was identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of MDDA Colony in Raipur.During questioning, Kumar reportedly told the police that he had entered the bank with the intention of committing theft. The police arrested him before he could carry out the crime. A metal rod used to break the locks and two broken locks were recovered from near the bank, police said. 

According to official sources, Kumar is addicted to drugs and told investigators that his addiction had led him to attempt the theft. Police also found that he had earlier been jailed in a theft case registered in Raipur in 2023. Based on the complaint filed by bank manager Sanjay Kumar Pal, a case has been registered at Dalanwala police station under the sections 305(e), 331(4) and 62 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
