Fisheries sector growing at rapid pace in Uttarakhand: Bahuguna

The Fisheries minister Saurabh Bahuguna has said that the State government is focusing on growth of the fishery sector. Responding to a question asked by BJP MLA from Doiwala, Brijbhushan Gairola, the minister said that the total production in the sector showed a remarkable growth of 22 per cent in the year 2023-24. He said that the total production in fisheries was 6,090 metric tonnes in the year 2021-22 which increased to 7,324 metric tonnes in the year 2022-23. The minister said that the production further jumped to 9,804 metric tonnes in the year 2023- 24.

He said that the government is also increasing the budgetary support to the sector. A sum of Rs 47.29 crore was allocated for the sector in the year 2019-20, Rs 41 crore in the year 2020-21, Rs 55.67 crore in the year 2021-22, Rs 73 crore in 2022-23, Rs 89.04 crore in 2023-24 and Rs 151 crore for the year 2024-25.

The minister also informed that the government is planning to encourage trout farming in 10 mountainous districts of the State. He informed that the State government is setting up an aqua park at Sitarganj in Udham Singh Nagar district for development of fisheries in the State. The Union government will spend a sum of Rs 40 crore while the State government will provide Rs 4.5 crore for the park. The park will support 10,444 fish farmers in the State and will have a capacity of 250 metric tonnes.
