GDMC Hospital security under lens after alleged sexual assault bid on patient

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

Concerns over safety and security at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital have resurfaced following an alleged sexual assault attempt on a woman patient by an STI counsellor. While both the police and hospital authorities referred to the incident as a “misunderstanding,” it has elicited concern among the people. As per the earlier reports, the victim informed that she visited the hospital on Tuesday seeking treatment for her illness, but the ordeal left her traumatised. She stated that the counsellor initially gained her trust by promising proper examination and medication for her quick recovery. However, during a power outage, he allegedly touched her inappropriately. Due to his reassurances, she did not suspect his intentions at the time.

Later, on the pretext of taking her to a ward or a doctor for examination, the accused led her to the hospital’s basement. It was only when she saw the area and was asked to remove her clothes that she realised something was wrong. She began to scream, managed to escape and subsequently reported the incident to hospital officials.

Regarding the actions following the incident, hospital officials revealed that the woman approached the police outpost with an oral complaint about inappropriate behaviour by a staff member at GDMC Hospital. After receiving the complaint, both parties were summoned to the outpost and the relevant witnesses were questioned. The inquiry revealed that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding. The woman later acknowledged this and submitted a written letter to the police station indicating that she did not wish to pursue legal action.

In a statement to The Pioneer, medical superintendent at the Hospital Dr RS Bisht confirmed that upon becoming aware of the incident, they promptly addressed the matter and referred it to the women’s cell. He reiterated that the event resulted in a misunderstanding. Bisht assured that the hospital administration is committed to ensuring the safety of every patient and said that CCTV cameras are installed in the hospital and are functioning properly. He noted that additional CCTV cameras would also be installed. He encouraged any patient or individual to approach him in case of any incidents.
